What does social engineering look like in action?
It could look like an email that has been designed to seem like it is from a credible organization, like your message service or your bank, but if you open it and click on that attachment, you could be installing malware or ransomware. Social engineering relies on persuading you to take action, such as clicking on a link or opening an attachment. This is the easiest way for a hacker to implement malware on a device. From a cybersecurity stand point, we are monitoring these attacks daily.
Let’s bring awareness to everyone on this topic to prevent these attacks from happening to you and your business. Check for these different signs when opening an email.
Tip 1: Never Give Out Personal Information – As a general rule, you should never share personal or financially sensitive information over the Internet. Most of the phishing emails will direct you to pages where entries for financial or personal information are required. An Internet user should never make confidential entries through the links provided in the emails. Never send an email with sensitive information to anyone. Make it a habit to check the address of the website. A secure website always starts with “https”.
Tip 2: Check the Headers of the Email – The headers of the email could be one character off, but look similar. Pay close attention to the email address it appears to be coming from – they will often replace letters with special characters, or capitalize one letter. Hover over links that you are unsure of before clicking on them. Do they lead where they are supposed to lead? A phishing email may claim to be from a legitimate company and when you click the link to the website, it may look exactly like the real website. The email may ask you to fill in the information, but the email may not contain your name. Most phishing emails will start with “Dear Customer” so you should be alert when you come across these emails.
There are many different tactics hackers use to try and social engineer. The job of Cyber Security is to stay up to date with all the different methods to protect customers and employees from these attacks. Let`s all work together to spread awareness on this topic to prevent these attacks from taking place!
